Defense Minister of Latvia to Honor NAZI Opponent Who Died In Chicago

On May 19, 2012, the Defense Minister of Latvia, Dr. Artis Pabriks will help dedicate a memorial plaque honoring Latvian army general Janis Kurelis, who died Dec. 5, 1954, in Chicago. Also attending will be Gen. Raimonds Graube, who is commander of the National Armed Forces of Latvia.
During NAZI Germany’s occupation of Latvia, in 1944, misleading German authorities, Kurelis formed a military unit that he envisioned as the nucleus of a reestablished national army of Latvia. Kurelis and his staff were arrested in a surprise attack by the German Security Service on November 14, 1944. Eight Latvian officers were executed by Germans; Kurelis was placed in custody. One battallion of the Kurelis' unit courageously continued battling superior German forces . Many were killed, many taken prisoner and sent to German concentration camps.
The memorial plaque is intended to honor not only Kurelis but all members of the Latvian resistance movement who dreamed of an independent and democratic Latvia free of NAZI German and Soviet rule. The plaque reads, in part: “Even in the darkest times, he had faith in the future of Latvia.”
The memorial plaque is being placed by the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, which is located in Riga, Latvia. read more

Latvija ir kļuvusi par pilntiesīgu NATO dalībvalsti! 25. NATO samits Čikāgā norisināsies šā gada 20. un 21.maijā. Latvijai nozīmīgākais jautājums, būs lēmums par turpmāko NATO gaisa telpas patrulēšanu Baltijas valstīs.
